Last week, the House Appropriations Committee at the Arizona State Legislature was set hear House Bill 2799, but because of a packed agenda, the hearing was moved to today. House Bill 2799 would appropriate $2.5 million to the Area Agencies on Aging in Arizona for increased provider rates for home and community-based services.
Area Agencies on Aging throughout the state have struggled to make ends meet with level funding, while competing with increased provider rates from AHCCCS and the rising minimum wage. In some areas of the State, Area Agencies have had to cut service hours in order to concentrate their limited funding. Here in Pima County, we have 66 people who have already been assessed to be in need of help by PCOA, but PCOA is unable to find a direct care worker who can enter their home, due in part to the lower rates we can pay. This additional funding will help to alleviate some of these issues. Though there is a lot of work still to be done, this funding would be a step in the right direction.
